LAW7: GET OTHERS TO DO THE WORK FOR YOU, BUT ALWAYS TAKE THE CREDIT

The book states that you should know how to take advantage of the people around you because this would guarantee you “godlike aura of efficiency and speed”.

Doing everything on one’s own would only get oneself exhausted and impoverished. You should not try to excel in all aspects of your work / task on your own but assign different people who are expert in the parts that you are not talented / knowledgeable of. Pushing yourself to excel in all aspects will only stress you out and will not benefit you. You should never be naïve and try to do everything on your own because there are people who are waiting to take credit of other people, and you are not excused in being their target.

In relation to this law, the story about Nikola Tesla, a Serbian scientist is discussed. Tesla was a brilliant inventor but he is not well-known because he was targeted by other inventors and his inventions were used by them. In other words, although Tesla was the one who invented a lot of things, others got the credits because Tesla was too naïve.

Once again, the essence of this law is that “you should learn to get others to do the work for you while you take the credit, and you appear to be of godlike strength and power”. However, this is just a helping strategy. This law should not be considered as the main basis. Not doing your work and just looking for chances wherein you can take the credits of others would not benefit you at all. This might even lead to total failure.

i agree that it is difficult to try to do everything. one can really get exhausted by trying to excel or be good in so many things. in addition to this, there might be greater chances where other people will take advantage of you and take the credit for the things that you have done. trying to do everything can indeed make other people notice. i also like what you said that this law should only be a helping strategy and not the main basis. if one were to take credit for the things other people did, then at least that person should choose those instances wisely. one can't just take credit at every possible instance. it is also important to be subtle and strategic. if you always let people do things for you and always take the credit, this can be problematic for you. people might ask you to do that thing again(thinking that you really did it), but in reality you may not know how. so if one were to take credit for the things other people did, then that person must try to have some knowledge about that thing so when people ask that person to produce results, that person will be ready. what do you think?

This, indeed is a very tempting law to exercise, especially to those that love to procrastinate and are just plain lazy. It saves them the time and effort from all the unnecessary stress from hard work that they can possibly get credit for without having to lift a single finger. Although, it is a very risky law to exercise because if they are caught by the deceived underdogs, then that will be the end of their leeching days.

Come to think of it, this law is applicable to everyday life in the Ateneo campus. Sounds a lot like plagarism in 20-page papers and cheating during long tests and mid-terms, doesn't it?

I agree with Miguel. This is a common occurrence in school and in other workplaces. There have been lots of instances wherein someone took credit for something he/she didn't actually do.

What I don't get is why people can't just focus on their own abilities and do something with it rather than go around stealing someone else's work.

Being excellent in every aspect doesn't exactly make one excellent if he/she just ripped another person's idea/piece.

Perhaps, there is a better way to put this. Knowing when to ask people for help to fill in for your incapability sounds like a more feasible option because it helps you while remaining just and fair to the person you're asking help from at the same. There is not a person in the world who doesn’t want to succeed. However, it’s important to be careful not to do so at the expense of others. We all know that.

This law can be applied to many great men in contemporary history:

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have taken indirect credit for the Graphical User Interface that started the age of personal computing (may even claim that Gates "stole" the GUI idea from Xerox). Alexander Bell may have stolen the idea of the telephone from Elisha Bell. Conspiracy theorist Richard Hoagland's credit for discovery the controversial Abydos Glyphs has been long disputed.

My point is, many leaders (and people) take false credit. Although this might seem ethically unsound, I do believe that a cunningly wise leader can apply this law to his or her advantage. A dim-witted leader who takes false credit will most certainly end up looking like an incompetent fool.

This is undeniably a smart strategy. One that saves time and energy. The best part about it is that you don't even have to lift a finger in order to be credited for a great amount of work. Yet, a smart tactic needs a smart execution. There are those who cannot be fooled by this. Do not be over-complacent when doing such a deed. Proper planning and caution is the key. Otherwise, once you get caught, it's over for you. What would people think? You would be damned for being a social loafer. Not only that but your once great reputation and dignity ends up spiraling down in a matter of seconds. This is a dangerous strategy that requires dexterity of planning. As invincible as the law could make you appear, it could also lead to your downfall if things get out of hand. The consequences could be crazy so play it well.

I agree with the usefulness of the law, but I don't think any morally upright person (the definition of "morally upright" being quite subjective, of course) would want to apply this. Unfortunately, as has been repeatedly said in the different laws, these are the laws of power, not the laws of the moral and upright so anything is fair in love and war, or so they say.

I agree that one has to practice this (like the others) law with a lot of caution as abuse of this law may lead to the demise of the user.

With the right finesse, though, I think this can and will benefit the user greatly.

Someone asked why anyone would want to do this. The answer: Well, it's easier. It's the "easy way out." Most people would like to be praised. (Maybe it's part of human nature?) Well, you get praised without you doing any work. It's like a win-win situation. No work + Lots of people who think you're cool = Great.

Again, the only problem is if it backfires on you (refer to other people's comments for various scenarios) so just try to get by on your own effort. What you get is what you deserve. Who knows? You might even find that more fulfilling.

I agree with this law in the sense that one should never feel that he can do everything. A good leader is someone who delegates and can see the strengths of others. If one is capable of allowing others to help out and develop their strengths, then that makes the person a good leader.

However, I disagree with the part where one "always takes the credit". I find that first and foremost unfair to those who helped out, because I have undergone this experience myself. It is easier to take the credit for everything, yet a good leader should acknowledge that he/she received help to make it possible.

This is like Pythagoras, where all his students wrote under his name and he got all the credit. He is indeed successful because of this but at least we know he had help the whole time.

Sorry for this but, I really disagree with this law.. It just sounds so wrong...not to mention "greedy".

I guess I can get the part that tells you how one cannot do everything, thus, giving the opportunity for others to take action and aid.

But to take credit for others' hard work?!?! That's unfair.

If you want to take the credit for something..then you must make sure that the credit you get is rightfully yours!

i think the effectiveness of this law depends on where you position yourself during the course of the "work". if you're never visible, how would you expect people to even associate you with the work? Unlike when you present yourself in front, you get to be easily associated with it, even though you didn't really do anything.

Also, I agree with what Krizia Javate said, that this requires "proper planning" and that "caution is the key". You can't last in the game if you just keep on charging.

i agree that knowing where to draw the line in terms of one's own capabilities is a skill -- because one needs to know oneself before one takes on responsibilities. the more dominant to each his own governs this particular law because it's your subordinate's responsibility to look out for his own interest. and, when we start out on various jobs and basically MERELY assist our leaders, we're basically doing the work for them while they show how capable they are as managers.

i think it's safe to question how someone in a position of power ROSE to that power when they were merely stepping on people in order to get ahead -- i believe that an even higher universal consequence will catch up to anyone who climbs this way: karma. if you don't know how to do the tasks your subordinates do for you, you won't be able to judge how well they're working, if they're managing to do their tasks correctly, if they're doing what they need to do at all.

i believe the secret to this law is compromise -- you have to find a balance between what you can accomplish and what you can not (because everyone has a limit). at the same time -- if you were given the responsibility to do something, it necessarily means that you are capable of handling it (or overseeing the work to accomplish it).

This is the most practical law so far. It's the best (probably only) to get anything big done if you're not gifted with supernatural/divine capacity. You don't even have to do anything underhanded to do it. Pharaoh's get their names attached to pyramids thousands of workers are responsible for. TEAM LEADERS are held responsible for what everyone in the group does but in the end get credit for the project. The trick to power is to make the effort to enlarge your personal entity to include as many people as possible. An invisible hand naturally organizes societies into hierarchies in order for them to achieve anything. It's the point of society. In order to gain power, you have to become society.

@ monica: i think the laws here aren't so much about excellence as they are about getting the upper hand and doing whatever is necessary to get your way (the easiest way and with the least effort, if possible). Getting credit without making the effort would not only give you more power with zero work on your part--it'd also give you the chance to direct your time and efforts to other/more things to make you more powerful.

It is difficult and extremely exhausting to exert all your effort in doing the impossible. Let's face it, we're not super heroes to be able to do everything. Any great leader needs back-up. And let me reiterate this: a back-up. Yes, a leader needs some assistance to succeed in tasks, but I don't believe it's right to leave everything to be done by other people.

I've tried that once, and it ended up disastrous because of numerous factors like efficiency and skill. You may have bombarded your minions with work, but the result might be a bit questionable.

This is something that is so common even in this day and age, wherein artists to scientists are protected by laws which give them specific rights over the fruits of their intellect. When corporations or even music/movie pirates benefit from works which are not rightfully theirs, they do not necessarily get praised or recognized for doing so. Instead, they generate profits. (Minimum or no input, maximum income) While this is frowned down upon, we cannot deny that we are currently living in a world where money is power.

I don't agree with this law because it states that you should ALWAYS take credit for what others do for you. Sure, there are times when you will also need help from others and still get the glory for it, but ALWAYS taking the credit, for me, is just too selfish. I mean, you can at least share "your" spotlight with them. They also did some part for you, so why spare them of their rightfully due credit.

I also believe in the saying "kapag may tiyaga, may nilaga". When you long for something, you should, as much as possible, try to do your best in achieving what you desire. So what if you don't get what you truly want in the end? At least you gave it your all, you worked hard for it and you can also use that failure as a learning experience.

On the other hand, if you are fortunate enough that you are able to get what you long for, then all the hard work and the effort you put will surely be worth it. In the end, it's just the matter of asking whether you have the patience to work yourself off or the stubborness to let others do ALL the work for you.

this is what politicians do. they have people doing the "dirty work" for them and in the end getting all the praises. We want leaders that can work too not just bully around their men and telling them what to do. They've got to be hands on. It is hard but when receiving that much power in position, they must also learn the ways. Imagine if they didn't have people, what else could they do but PR?
I remember one instance that MVP closed down one badminton place for his own. He had body guards everywhere and even had people taking his shirt of for him. If that reached the public, oh no.. haha. lifestyle of the rich and famous.

It is difficult to do everything yourself, whether or not you're good at it so this is good advice. Although, you do have to be careful. Whether or not you use this advice, you can guarantee someone will.If you do something you have to make sure that no one else takes credit for it.
However, this Law could be used to your advantage in more than the way that the law suggests.
Wouldn't it be a pleasant surprise if someone took credit for your work but it turns out that the job you did was a dud? or something that could potentially ruin their career?
It happened to Freud. He discovered a medication that alleviates symptoms of depression but when he took a break from work, a colleague took credit for his discovery only to find out later on that the medication was Cocaine.

I agree with what Miguel said. It's true that this actually is "exercised" even in school. I guess what makes it more rampant is that people don't know how to make their inaptitude work to their advantage. On the other hand, others are just too good at being lazy (regardless of being smart, whatsoever) that they make the pitiful hardworking groupmates work for them. It's amusing, I actually think the people who take credit for something they didn't do are.. smart. In a really "magulang" way.

Nowadays, people are more concerned with being ahead of the game and are less concerned with keeping their conscience intact. If you apply this law, I think it is important to take note of who you use. You should target people who can easily be manipulated to do your part of the work and who you know won't fight back. However, if you always let people do things for you how will you truly learn? You'll probably end up stagnating. Yes, you can't do everything but that doesn't mean that you can't do anything. If you use this law as your main strategy then you won't really go far because you're simply climbing up the ladder of power by stepping on other people. What will happen if you're left alone with no one to take your work load off of you?

I do not agree with this law. In the film industry, when a movie succeeds or flops, it is often the director who is held responsible. Though his name comes out on the film posters and at the beginning of the movie, there is a reason why there's a finale song while the credits play. Though the director has many people under him who do the menial tasks and take care of the minute details, he knows that he cannot simply always take the credit. Any intelligent movie goer will know that one man cannot possibly work alone to make a movie. Though he has others do their respective tasks, he knows to give credit when credit is due--not just for the sake of being unselfish, or because the viewers aren't idiots, but because of the simple fact that if he wants to continue to direct, he will need to build a respected image and good rapport with his subordinates so that they will continue wanting to work for him.

I agree with Regina, obviously this law can have its uses however, I still believe that excelling in every possible means is the best way to outdo one's self. Let's take people like Leonardo da Vinci, and other Renaissance men who achieved great things by not concentrating at what they were good at.

I believe that if you have the will to excel in everything you aspire for, even if you don't do as well as your peers, you get the satisfaction that you did your best.

It is true that it is stated in the law that we have to take the credit always, but I don't think that this is too selfish, as you are saying because for me, reading a book and using the idea of that author to produce a new idea / thought is already taking credit. Therefore, although I agree that taking credit from others can sometimes be a selfish thing to do, I think using the ideas / inventions of others is also wise. :)

I agree that this law = power but perhaps one downside that I could see if I were to follow this law strictly is that people value what they think is genuine. Once they figure out that you are only taking credit of and not contributing to the work of other people, then you're "excellence" can only be attributed to the fact that you have resources- you're not exactly excellent innately.

The problem with the law I think, therefore, would be that it's incomplete. I think it'd be more effective if you get others to do the work for you, tweak the work or develop it (doesn't matter how small the change was) and THEN, take credit for it.

You didn't get yourself exhausted or impoverished, you just made yourself more credible and worthier in the eyes of people to deserve to be refered to as one who has a "godlike aura of efficieny and speed".

In companies, this is probably the job of every boss. He lets the lowly peons do the grunt-work and still, still take the credit for it all. But one would argue that it's management. Making sure all the workers and followers do their job is no easy task. Leadership directed toward accomplishing a common goal is arguably a heroic task if you think about it.

But seriously, I would rather do lots of work, put a lot of effort, strive for excellence and just make sure I'm the one who gets the credit rather than make someone else do the work and steal the credit from that person. I just find it really unfair. If you think about it, wouldn't you feel undeserving for being praised for something that you didn't do? I mean, really, i wouldn't care about appearing to be "of godlike strength and power" if i don't deserve it.

This law can actually be used in a positive light, where one doesn't have to be viewed as a "user." By being a true leader, and assigning people to work according to their strengths would actually show how capable one is. Using the skills of his followers to the fullest would still allow him to get credit, and actually deserve it. Nevertheless, people can also do the opposite; they can merely lay back, relax and wait for an opportune moment to strike and take all the credit for the work of others. This is actually quite common in school, when students have group projects. There are times we have those who leech off their group mates and don't really do anything. Towards the end of the project they suddenly rise from the shadows and take all the glory. I personally believe that the former example shows true power, whereas the second one doesn't.

this law is a question of what one believes in. Indeed having power over others holds a certain advantage. It is also necessary for one to maximize all of his or her resources efficiently. Most leaders throughout history have practiced this law. Unfortunately the people who observe this law are not exactly liked or befriended. Either way, as a result of practicing this law, they have prospered.

First off, there is a big difference when we use the words always and sometimes. Given this, I still stick to my opinion that ALWAYS taking the credit is selfish.

As I have said in my previous comment, whenever we use the works of others, the least that we can do is share the spotlight with them. If you remember in our english classes, the teachers always try to explain the concept of plagiarism.

In connection to what you said, taking ideas from other authors is not wrong, as long as we give them the proper acknowledement they deserve. We are punished for plagiarising because we, for some reason (tinatamad), take away the credit that is rightfully theirs.

Don't get me wrong. I am not against you and your thought of using others' ideas as wise. I am against the law because of the word always.

The way the law was explained seemed that we should use other people's hardwork for our own benefits which in a moral context is wrong. I guess it should be stated in a better way in which one should be able to utilize the capabilities of the group or other people involved.

In our current life as students or in the future when we get jobs this law may be applied but still it is not something you could take pride in since it is as if you did not do anything.

In addition, people who are responsible are not always present and there will be chances you couldn't not find any help from others.

Sure this law seems unethical, but i agree that it's something that happens every time. Leaders often take credit for the things their people do. Though, I find it only useful for those with very strong power. Look at it this way, if you're not in complete and total control, if there are many with the same amount of power as you and you decide to take credit for the work of others, who would want to work with you again? You'd have to do things yourself the next time. In that case, wouldn't you just have ended up with more work than before?

I think the idea behind this law is delegation and exploiting other's needs and wants.
Take large companies like microsoft; The company and the owner (Bill Gates) gets all of thecredit for the work produced. When a new microsoft product is made available, it's him and his company under the spot light, not the contributors, employees and patent holders of the techs used to create the new product.
All of their employees and contributers are paid off in one way or another; given a good salary, paid a good price for licensing etc, but the largest slidce of the pie in every sence (the most important in this case being the credit), goes to Microsoft/Bill Gates.
The same applies for non proffit items too; Linux is famous for many things, not it's MANY contributors.
Ofcourse those working in or close to the development will know who contributed what, as I am sure scientists of Tesla's day working in the same field as he knew exactly who he was, but in the long run it really doesn't matter.
